EPA Teaching Center (Water)

This website gives resources for professional and amateur teachers alike to help teach students about water safety. It provides links to websites that are both fun and informative. In addition, the website has links to other environmental safety websites, including information about air pollution, climate change, waste & recycling, and many more topics.

World Water Day

World Water Day is an event hosted by the United Nations every year on March 22. The idea is to raise awareness about the importance of the availability of fresh water, and the need for sustainable management of these resources. Each year the theme of World Water Day is different, and this year the focus was put on transnational water boundaries, and the value of sharing these waters peacefully

 

 

Global Economy

·         "Good Stuff" -- Worldwatch Institute

This “behind-the-scenes guide to things we buy” offers tips for lessening the negative environmental and social impacts of everyday products. It also includes history and facts about each of the products, as well as links to websites that provide more information.

·         Kiva

Kiva works with microfinance institutes to allow online micro-lending between individuals and entrepreneurs around the world. Individual lenders choose an entrepreneur to sponsor and can track repayments throughout the course of the loan. Kiva High School is a special group designed to support student participation in the Kiva experience.

·         Teaching Economics (Middle School)

The Global Education Advisory Council has compiled a list of resources for teaching economics to middle school students. These resources have been matched with the Massachusetts state frameworks and aim to make economics relevant to students.

·         To Our Credit

This two-part series from PBS examines the development of microcredit. The first part focuses on stories from Bangladesh, South Africa, India, and Bolivia; and the second part focuses on New England, Arkansas, South Dakota, and Chicago.

·         Center for a New American Dream

This website provides information about the effect of consumerism on the environment and biodiversity, and offers tips and ideas for getting involved and taking action.

     The Globalist

The Globalist publishes a daily online magazine about global economy, politics, and culture. There are several resources designed for use in the classroom. Every Sunday, The Globalist Quiz offers questions for consideration in thinking about our shrinking world.

 

 

Environment

·         Climate Change Resources

This website provides lesson plans for grades 1-12 on topics relating to climate change and its consequences. Topics include forests, agriculture, water, and coastal areas, and the lesson plans are designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the causes and effects of climate variability.

·         The Earth Institute

Columbia University’s Earth Institute works “to help the world pave a path toward sustainability.” The Institute implements sustainability projects in several countries and holds conferences to disseminate information about their work. The Institute also offers courses on environmental science and the website provides information about funding opportunities for students and educators.

·         Focus the Nation

is a movement of students, politicians, community leaders, business leaders, scientists, and more, committed to a clean energy future for our planet.

·         Global Cool

Global Cool emphasizes the power of individuals to help defeat global warming by reducing their own carbon footprints. The website provides several ways to reduce the use of non-renewable energy.

·         PlayPumps International

Play Pumps International is a non-profit organization that aims to bring easy access to water for all people across Sub-Saharan Africa. Their website gives in depth information on both the problems revolving around drinking water related diseases, and the lack of accessible water to many people across Africa.

·         Water for Life

This website follows Jay-Z’s water for life tour that raised money and awareness for the growing need for better and more reliable sources of water across the world. Includes information about the issues surrounding water consumption and possible solutions that can be worked out in the near future.

 

·         Google Lit Trips

This website uses Google Earth as a teaching tool to pair with literature. Students can see images of and learn about the places visited in the literature they are reading.
